Meet Hazel and Olive!

Meet Hazel and Olive! These two PetziFamily members are truly one of a kind with an amazing human family too!

hazelHazel came to Dennis and Joe (her new owners) at about 10 weeks old and since then, she has had a personality of her own. She thinks she’s a human baby! She’s never acted like a dog nor does she remotely even think she’s a dog. Hazel, the queen-bee herself,  hates to walk uphill, hates the sound of birds, and especially hates bagpipes (yup – there are often pipers playing in Central Park right around the corner to where she lives). She loves to watch TV and cock her head when children are on the screen and will bark and growl when a dog appears. Every night before Hazel goes to bed, she will grab her stuffed owl, and fall asleep with it in her mouth.

Olive on the other hand is wild and carefree. She’s happy to see anyone who passes her way and would prefer to be held all day. She likes to pull towels off the bathroom rack and drag them into another room. She pays no attention to the TV because she’s always got her mind on something else. If she’s scolded, she just runs into another room and creates havoc there instead. Unlike Hazel, Olive can’t fall asleep unless her paw is touching some part of her dad Dennis’s body.

Hazel was the only female in a littler of 5 from a family on Long Island – where her parents Dennis and Joe took her home at 10 weeks old. Olive was a rescue from the Ramapo Bergen Animal Shelter in NJ. She was saved from an unhappy situation and acclimated to life in Manhattan quite well. It was a struggle at first but she rules the roost now.

Hazel and Olive are not your ordinary pet, in fact, these two pups are living the spoiled life. Their favorite day of the week is Wednesday – that’s the day Ivonne comes to do the housekeeping. The two pugs sit and stare at the door from about 7:15AM until she arrives. Needless to say, she brings them cheese danishes from the coffee cart on our corner. They get absolutely hysterical at the site of Ivonne entering the apartment and don’t let her out of their site for the next 4-5 hours. Besides watching Ivonne,  their other favorite thing to do is go out for long walks in Central Park.

Hazel and Olive told us how cool their dad is, and how he is a Pet advocate and works closely with animals. Dennis served as the president of the Central Park Paws steering committee for several years, where they organized lots of dog events in the park and help build community awareness about responsible dog ownership. He also volunteers for Animal Haven Soho and Last Resort Pet Adoption and is in process of starting volunteer work with the Mayor’s Alliance for Animals. Hazel and Olive also told us that their dad had an amazing experience at an animal war memorial in London. We were so fascinated about this animal memorial that we asked Dennis to share his experience of the memorial:

“While in London in early September, I came upon the Animals in War Memorial at the edge of Hyde Park – not far from Park Lane, where we were staying in Central London.  It pays tribute to the animals that suffered or died during the wars of the 20th Century.  I found it to be a solemn place with several lovely and large sculptures of different animals and memory books where people can write in their thoughts, prayers and memorials to animals they have known.  There were wreaths and flowers strewn about and divided by a wall filled with bas-reliefs and silhouettes and several inscriptions. I think that if I lived in London, I’d take my dogs there as often as possible to pay my respects and to find peace amongst the art and the animals.  The British love their dogs (of course, we all have an image of Queen Elizabeth with her corgis at Balmoral) – a wonderful thing to see while visiting London is the Victorian Pet Cemetery in Hyde Park with graves dating back to the 1880’s”

Dennis and Joe are amazing owners who truly love their fur-babies, and also love the k-9 species. We are so happy that they shared their story with us, and so glad to see they had the same love for animals as we do here at Petzi. To see more of Hazel and Olive, check out their Petzi Social!
