How To Keep Your Pet Safe on Halloween

Halloween is finally here! Between dressing up, getting candy and watching scary movies, Halloween is a time to have fun and be someone else for the night! Whether you are Superman or Princess Leia, it is important to be safe. But lets get real, Halloween isn’t just for humans, it’s also for pets! And pet safety on Halloween is just as important. Here are some tips on how to keep your pet safe this Halloween!

1. Don’t feed your dog ANY candy

The best part about Trick-or-Treating is collecting all the yummy candy, however it can be very dangerous if your pup gets ahold of it. Make sure your pup especially stays away from chocolate and xylitol( a common artificial sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum). If your pet is experiencing any discomfort, it is important to contact your local vet right away. For more information, click here.

2. Make sure Fluffy’s costume is a good fit

Dressing up your pet for Halloween is by far the most fun thing to do, however it’s important that your pet is comfortable. Costumes can sometime add heavy stress to a pet, so make sure your pet is happy and comfortable once you put on the costume. Also, make sure the costume fits your pet perfectly and does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. Click here for more information.

3. Keep pets confined and away from the door

With Tick-or-Treater’s constantly coming to your door, dressed in unusual costumes, it may cause your pet stress and can be scary for your fur babies. Dogs are especially territorial and may become anxious and growl at innocent trick-or-treaters. Putting your dog or cat in a secure room away from the front door will prevent them from this unneeded stress. For more information, click here.
